Welcome, Bert. I think Kurt summed it up pretty well a while back.
Quote:
The story that was passed down from generation to generation to me is that one of the Web founders had a domain name of Dorkiphus that was sitting unused. When the damn fine idea of this site popped up it was put into service right off the shelf. When the site started to take off the “Originators” asked what name to give it and the overwhelming vote was keep this one in place.
It is a derivation of the fable of Sisyphus. He was a poor bastard condemned for eternity into pushing a rock up a hill so steep that just as he was near the top it would get away from him, roll back down and he would have to start over. Modern version is writing computer code from what I have heard, hence the “dork” modification. Early Porsches are also an unending labor in my opinion.
