Don't know about the tip', but $1k on eBay sounds pretty risky...

If he thinks it's worth $6k, but he's selling for 40% less, than he knows it is not worth $6k. 150k+ on a 25-year-old motor that 'runs strong' -- I would question that unless he's had it dyno'd recently. Chances are you could be looking at a motor refresh as well as the transmission replacement unless you only want to get it working a flip it.
