fwiw, the "spec" tires, are spec for a reason - they balance a cost/wear/use pattern pretty well (for racers, who otherwise would run Hoosiers).

fwiw, I've used Falken Azenis rt615s and find they have good grip/wear characteristics. I think they also have a newer version (rt660?)
I see the rt660 is a newer version available in my size. Funny you mention Hoosiers since I don't see R1s in 255/40-17 anyway.
I ran the cup 2s for a couple years and they are no doubt expensive! Plus early on I was really rolling the front tires so had significant wear on the outside. Since I don't need to drive on them to the track I had them turned around on the rims to get some more life out of them.
