Spec Boxster (SPB) is a good choice for a first race car, with some of the lowest operating expenses possible for a Porsche. However, you won't be breaking 1:22s in SPB; the current track record at SP Main for SPB is 1:23.383.
The going rate for a mostly-ready-to-run SPB is around $30K, and they don't last too long on the market. If you can do most of the work of building a stock Boxster into a race car, you can build an SPB for under $30K, but the trade-off is your time and labor. Or, you can contact a shop like Atlanta Speedwerks to build a car for you, which will run $35K-$45K, depending on options.
