Here is an update: Using the second key didn't work either. The tow truck driver came and after deciding not to insert a tool through the window to pull on the interior door handles, we went ahead and towed the car to the dealership instead. The alarm did not sound when the vehicle was raised, so we think that the battery is dead. Still, why the key won't open the door manually no one can figure out. So it is up to the dealership now.
The tow service I used is Morton's in Montgomery County, MD. I have used them before for things and they have always been very good. Their driver took extra care with my car too. He raised up and set the rear wheels on trucks, then lifted the front with his truck, so nothing got damaged.
