Sinkhole Opens Up In National Corvette Museum, Swallows Eight Cars

A 40-foot wide hole swallowed eight classic Corvettes
Posted: Feb 12, 2014

A 40-foot wide, 25-30-foot deep sinkhole opened up inside the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. early Wednesday morning, swallowing eight classic sports cars.

Museum officials said the hole was discovered when motion sensors activated around 5:45 a.m. The museum usually maintains live feeds of the of the floor so enthusiasts can view the cars on display, but cameras in the area where the sinkhole appeared have been down.

A 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil," both on loan from General Motors, were among the cars that fell into the sinkhole. The museum owned the other affected Corvettes, which included a 1963 Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car and the one millionth Corvette ever produced.

Museum officials, worried about the structural integrity of the building, removed an irreplaceable 1983 Corvette from the premises, according to The Courier-Journal.

It's unclear how much damage the cars have suffered as a result of the sinkhole. The museum is closed Wednesday while a structural engineer assesses the damage.
