That was to assure that he would return for the court date to get his license back. In the interim, the citation was to serve as a temporary license issued by that state.

Not long after that, but in another state, he was stopped again for speeding, and asked to show his license. He had to point out to the second officer that the document he handed over was not just a citation, but was also a temporary license issued by the other state.

Even after all these years, the image of that still makes me laugh. Chick seemed to enjoy telling those stories as much as everyone else enjoyed hearing them.
You have it exactly right. Jim Atwell was a retired colonel (Air force, I think) and was a part time salesman at Heishman's. He and Chick did the Canon Ball thing several times in either his 911 or Chick's. Eventually they did the "One Lap of America" (I think it was called). That was another Brock Yates thing. Chick had a framed Road and Track cover (I think it was Road and Track) that was a picture of a bunch of Canon Ball participants, including Stanton and Atwell on the roof of the Red Ball garage in New York City, standing next to their cars preparing to start the race. It hung on the wall behind Chick's desk for many years!--Dave
