On the key fobs, most of the time the carrier frequency will work but the digital signal on top of it fails. They are cranky, sensitive to water, moisture, and dropping.
The reason I suggested 2 keys is that when you lose your only key, add the tow bill on the replacement.
There was a TSB about extending the range but the design distance was about 30 feet.
