On the earlier 986/996's with the spare tire, the tool kit included an aluminum post the screwed into one of the bolt holes, and helped align the wheel to get the bolts started. We've used it for years on our Boxster. I prefer lug nuts to bolts, but for occasional wheel changes, the alignment post worked quite well.

I actually made some spare posts with a 14x1.5 die and some half inch rod stock. With two posts it's even easier to locate the wheel. My preference is still for studs, though. I'm liking the bullet heads.
