His FATAL error was simple.
He qualified seventh, but he was gridded sixth. When the grid boss waved him onto the track, he pointed to the car next to him meaning to indicate "let this guy go before me". BIIIIIG rookie mistake.
Grid boss sees this as a wave off, meaning "I am not ready to roll", and rightly held him until the next car in line and all other gridded cars were on track. The rule is: Roll when signalled. If you cannot roll when signalled, you will wait until the entire field has rolled.
Its amazing he survived his charge up through the field on the formation lap. He should have been black flagged for this performance, and he's lucky he was not punted into the grass by one of the guys he was passing. Believe me, nobody anticipates a maniac charging through the field on the formation lap!
