Bill you might have enough room with your flared fenders to swap the struts with out removing the ball joint pin.

I have done it by undoing the brake line as discribed by David, unhooking the sway bar, and then pushed the shock piston down with a long screwdriver until I could grab the cover and pull the shock cover off exposing the large nut that holds the strut in. To remove the nut use the koni tool if you have it, if not BF channel locks can handle the job.

Pull the old strut out and give it to me.
