yes, helmet that meets the current Snell Foundation rating (nothing older than 2005, I think, but this bears checking. if you're buying a new helmet, buy the most recent Snell rated helmet).
ChrisM's suggestion to buy DOT 4 brake fluid (ATE Super Blue or Gold, Motol, Ford Heavy Duty DOT 4, etc., etc.) is a good one. Flush the brake system and refill with this and you're good for six months, so do this close as possible to your first track event. You will need to attend an HPDC (High Performance Driving Clinic) before attending any Potomac DE, unless you have significant track/racing experience, sign up for that at earliest opportunity.
