x whatever on the "you need nothing but a working car". Bring a stock, well maintained street car to an HPDC and start from there.
If you're buying new brake pads, get a decent set of high performance street pads like Hawk HPS instead of $20 Mintex. Change the brake fluid with something decent like ATE 200 instead of the latest Advance Auto Parts brand fluid, and you'll be set for several DEs. These are good street car upgrades so if you decide the track isn't for you you haven't wasted any money. If you do decide that you like the track thing, you'll burn through the pads faster than you'll be ready to step up to the next level anyway, so no worry about wasting money there either.
