I replaced mine the other year since the bearings were starting to fail, easier then I expected but I strained my back a little during installation. Shop that rebuilt the alternator also replaced a bad diode along with the regulator.
A client of mine just had the alternator replaced on his VW by the Stealership.
$500 for the Alternator plus $400 labor then tax, ouch.
