First gear is the weakest point in overpowered 914's. Shearing the teeth off first is not unusual. Instead of locking out first gear racers will remove first/reverse gear set to avoid this problem and save a pound and a half of weight. Makes these cars alot of fun in the paddock. Torquey motors will shear the teeth off the pinon.
Racers with motors over 400-450hp are pretty much forced into the 930 trannys. By the time you get to 450hp the tranny is probably the cheapest part.
