I'm a big fan of Garmin products. I really like the Garmin Quest & Quest 2 models. Though smaller in size, they are totally portable, and much easier to transfer between cars and hide when necessary. Also can be easily used as handheld while hiking or biking. Waterproof, too. Quest 2 has the advantage of including nationwide detail maps built in; means you don't have to download blocks of detail maps from your pc.

I think the products are very well made, and the associated software (Mapinfo) is easy to use. Amazon.com has had good pricing on them.
