The 964 case was only used in the early 996 turbo cars. The replaced the molds with a new 996 numbered case in 03 IIRC. The 997 turbo has the 996 turbo case which may be renumbered to a 997 part...

After spending my share of time at a local dealer and doing this work under warrenty I can tell you the issue with the RMS is far greater on the 996 and 986 than probably every other model combined....

Yes they are different. The 944 muffler section has a three bolt flange and the turbo a four bolt flange at the cat. If you want the turbo muffler some welding is going to be required.
