What to do when switching pads ?

A friend of mine swears that he needs to get his rotors re-surfaced when he switches pad compounds. Is that right ?

What do you guys do when going from street to track pads and back again ?

Generally having rotors on Porsche resurfaced is not a good idea. There’s just not much between good and not good. Deep ridges in the rotor don’t really effect the pad and if warped they need replacing anyway. Just replace the pads. Story is different for Fords and others though I don’t resurface my “others” anymore either.

He's got a Sentra SE. He's worried about the pad material that's already transferred to the rotor.

All he needs to do is rebed the brakes according to the manufacturers directions. Go to the performance friction or hawk websites. That should do the trick.

Some manufacturers recommend resurfacing. But that's to protect against complaints/ call backs due to noise more than anything else (at least that's how it was explained to me when I was helping my sister argue with a local GM dealer). I even read a tech bulletin about it that GM had supplied to their dealers -- all it mentioned was squealing complaints, not performance issues.

Agree with the others ....

Nice to do but ... not necessary.
