Possible 928???
Hi guys,
I haven't posted in quite a while, but I've been lurking! I just can't keep away; the allure is just too strong! Anyway, I have been in contact with the owner of this car: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...hreadid=244891 I have started the ball rolling for a PPI at Curry's of Dulles. Am I nuts? I must say the attraction of 310 HP right now as opposed to waiting for a little bit of lag is certainly appealing. I know we've heard horror stories about how expensive these engines are to rebuild and about not being too user-friendly to work on, but are they really that bad? I have also heard to buy the latest model you can afford, but of course the later models are much pricier. At that point I would just go with a 911. So, what are your thoughts? I know what an unopinionated group you are:), so let's have 'em!!! |

I did quite a bit of research on the 928 as a potential track car, before buying the 951. No question they are a sweet road car, and there is a small but very helpful group of guys who track them very successfully. They ARE heavy, which is one of the issues when looking to track the 928.
Given you are looking seriously, you should plan to attend the 928 Frenzy events being held in the area in a few weeks. Details on the Potomac PCA website. There are some really good guys in this crew, and all the advice and help you will need. Not sure I would choose Curry's for a PPI on the 928. Find someone who really knows these cars. Thanks for the insight Tony. My choice was Curry's because of the current owner's proximity to them. He is close to Dulles so that won't put him out too much. With all of the maintenance/upgrades that have recently been done to the car was also what prompted me to look seriously at this one. It certainly does not appear to have been abused and left for the next owner to sort out. I would like to get my next car on the track, whatever it may be, but it would be for DE's, not competition. I know a concern in this department is oil sloshing in high-g situations. There is a baffle from later cars to put in the pan that supposedly remedies this. Currently, there are a couple of drips from the pan gasket, so it sounds like a good time to take care of both items! On a positive note, it sounds like the current brakes/suspension on the car should certainly be up to track duty, now.

You need a 928-savvy tech for the PPI. One of the Dorki will know where Chris Prack is working, and he is certainly one choice. Charlie Murphy at Intersport would be my first choice.

Chris is at Curry's. Charlie can pick a car apart real well. 928s are fun to own until something happens then they make a 931 look simple and made composed of easy to get parts. Take a look under pass side foot board. ;)

our own Matt de Maria was working out some electrical/electronic bugs on a 928 when I was at his shop recently. So far he has replaced two separate computers in the car to the tune of $1500 and $2000 for each of the two. Don't know how many more are in those cars but this was reason enough for me....
unless you really want to track it and just run some kind of a custom computer that would control all the essentials and forego the fancy 80's technology, I'd be somewhat scared of these cars. |
I just emailed the owner about bringing the car to Charlie. I also spoke to Dogan about specifically having Charlie do the inspection; he said that it would be fine. The PPI will probably be towards the end of the week. . . . Do the earlier '80's cars have all of the computers or was it with the changes that occurred in '85?

928's were and might still be the best GT car of their time. Every comfort you can think of is there, controlled by 15+ yr old technology.
911's didnt get complicated until the 964, and really the 996. |
