Can you explain your screen name? You spend a lot of time in the Ramapo, or something?

ramaporunner 09-22-2005 10:28 AM

Ramapo Runner

Lived in Va Beach in the Eliz River and my address was Ramapo Court. It was one of those quickly thought up names that I still use. No experience w/ Ramapo River..

In the Eliz River? Yuk :D.
I grew up in Va Beach myself. I'd change my screen name, but CastleHillCourtRunner just doesn't have the same ring to it. Looks like your still in the area.

<ahem> Chris, did you notice he is selling a 964?

Jazzbass 09-22-2005 01:28 PM

Yeah, I noticed. I'm looking for something a little less pretty and a little more trackyier.

It's a very old Indian name, said to mean slanted rock, which would aptly describe the Ramapo Mountains. There is still a tribe of Ramapough Indians (they use the old Dutch spelling) in Northern NJ and Southern NY, living in isolated parts of the Ramapo Mountains, descendants of the original Munsee/Delaware, or Lenni Lenape that inhabited the area before European settlement. There is only one pass through the Ramapo Mountains spanning the NY/NJ border (the Ramapo Pass), and in colonial times that pass was the only way to travel between NY and NJ by land. It was a major and hard fought over strategic objective during the Revolutionary war that changed hands several times between British and American forces. General Washington had his headquarters nearby at an estate along the Ramapo River at the foot of the mountains. Rt 17 runs up through the pass. Anyway, the name, Ramapo, has something of a lofty pedigree.

Matthew, it's a little know fact, but I think we're changing your screen name to Cliff Clavens.
