This is what happens when a 1 year old timing belt snaps.

No biggie. Those parts are cheap and readily available, right?

When do you quit your daytime gig and open the shop? Great work man.

Wow! If it wasn’t for bad luck, you wouldn’t have any luck at all! ’44s & timing belts… can you think of enough curse words to describe the pain!

jpinkert 08-27-2005 11:24 AM

That alone is why all cars should have chains driving the cams.

Tongue in cheek: 7 out of 8 ain't bad. Buy a lotto ticket.
Seriously, that's a real shame. You said it was 1 year old. What was the manufacture? Was it tensioned correctly? Did the pistons and head survive?

racer 08-27-2005 11:35 AM

I guess either #8 is perfect or shattered completely... miz.. :(

Is that out of the new to you 944? That stinks!

The belt was a continental. Have no idea if it was tensioned properly since it happened 3 days after I got it home. Pistons are fine, head is fine and back on the car. I would have had it finished today but for the unexpected rain.

Now tell me truthfully, ain’t working on ’44 right up there with… oh say a root canal without anesthesia… no, no, a do it yourself vasectomy (with a rusty, dull pen knife)… no, no cutting your arm off so you can drop 30 feet onto “sharp” rocks (using that same knife)

Of course while you were in there you replaced the water pump, oil cooler and balancing shaft seals etc. etc. etc.? Sorry, I was scared once by a ’44 repair bill and I’ve never gotten over it.

Scary, but looks like you're half way done. I've heard terrible stories of guys buying 15-20 year old belts (NOS). How many miles? Was it a break or slipped belt?
