How difficult is it to replace the 3rd gear syncro?

Is this a DYS option or don't even think about it.

The transmission was completely rebuild with new syscros, roller berrings a couple dog gears etc about five years ago, so I am somewhat confident that other then the 3rd gear syscro everything else should be in good shape.

You can DIY it, a couple guys here have rebuilt their 915s. It's not a beginner level thing, though. So if the thought of changing tie rods is a big deal, this is probably not the thing to start with. There is a ton of 915 rebuild info out there - start with a search of the pelican Parts BBS.

Any idea why your 3rd gear synchro went before the others? In these cars, 1st and 2nd are usually the first to go, so if you've burned through 3rd through the normal course of driving, I wouldn't be too surprised to see that 1st and 2nd need a little attention, too. You won't know until you open it up, though.

Summit Point is hard on third gear for me. I have gotten better at the heel toe aspect but 3rd still bears the brunt of hard downshifts

3rd gear syncro replacement requires a complete tear down of the box and one of the gear stacks (can't remember whether it is main shaft or pinion shaft). Main shaft seal should be replaced if you are opening the box.

WOW nice job documenting the rebuild. Based on what I saw there is no way I am attempting this job. I will likely bring the Trans to a pro, have them do the work and I will re-install.
