Gas Cap seal
 

It came to my nose's attention at SP that perhaps my Gas Cap doesn't seal as well as it could. This was particular noticable when running through turns 7-8-9. I think the sloshing around exacerbated the problem.

I believe the cap to be original to the car, but I have no way to confirm this.

The car is a 1978 SC. The cap itself threads into the fuel filler neck. Can I still get this style of cap and where? Dealer? Aftermarket? Swap meets? Does the hardened "gasket" at the base remove for replacement? Thoughts, suggestions etc..

Fellows, this is a big deal.
Couple years ago Pete Kauffman had a student at VIR. After 1 session Pete smelled gas so they checked the gas cap. Decent cap with a good seal. Went out for another session, Pete smelled gas but before they got back to the pits the driver spun the car and scuffed the bumper. When they got back to he pits there were signs of something going on behind the rear wheel. They checked the car for oil leaks and couldn't find any. They kept looking and for some reason found that the metal pipe from the gas tank was bent not allowing a good seal with the gas cap.

Looking at the schematic on Pelican, the cap looks completely different than mine.

Mine looks "T" shaped. The vertical part of the "T" threads down into the filler neck. The horizontal part of the "T" has a seal on the bottom and covers the filler neck opening completely.

The one in the schematic looks like it threads "around" the neck, not "inside" the neck. Is it just a bad drawing or is it April 1 already... Would it still be compatible? Ideas?

I have a seal that is supposed to fit both the gas cap and the oil cap (which I bought it for). If you want to try it out, you're more than welcome.

I had a similar situation last year at Jefferson Circut and found that a clamp was loose on the vent line. Check that before you buy anything - might be a twist of screwdriver on clamp to solve your problem. :D

Guess I'll have to light up a cigarette and go have a better look see. My fear would be that the filler neck is cracked, as that part alone seems to be several hundred dollars, plus removal and install. I did note traces of fluid around the cap on the rubber piece that rests in the compartment. I also noticed moisture along the inside of the front fenderwell. Maybe I have multiple problems :?
