Do I need any glue for front winshield seal replacement?
 

101 things book doesn't indicate a need for glue. Am I ok with just the new seal?

This is something I researched also when replacing my windshield, and found a lot of opinions for an against, mostly against. Some said no glue, some said glazing compound, and some said it should go in dry.

I used 3M Glazing and Bedding compouned when mine went in, which is a type of sealant that doesn't dry hard like an epoxy, making it possible to remove the windsheild later without breaking it. The only downside is that the stuff is messy as hell, but cleans up easy enough.

Have you removed the old glass yet?

Not yet. I was waiting for this rain to go away so I had a string of dry days.

I am still trying to get the nerve up to make that first cut into the old seal.

Ahh, the great glue debate.
Here's what I found:
Fisrt, I think this might be year dependant, but the Euro cars did not have any glue. Federlization required it. Mine had no glue when it was removed. The no glue pro was that if in an accident the windsheild could easily be pushed out. Here in the us however they had a reason for gluing it in. So does that mean the Euro cars had no sealer?
I think they did.
Currently mine is in dry with a new rubber seal. I found some clear sealer that came in a syringe and has a needle attached to the end. This I assume is to get it in the crack between the rubber and the glass.

I'm intrested to find out if anyone has used or heard of this stuff. I'm not at home so I can't tell you what it is exactly. I got it at advance auto I think.

I don't know why you are replacing, but don't forget some or most insurance compaines will pay to have a pro do it if there is enough dammage.

Howard - some advice from someone who has removed a windshield and screwed up the trim:

Cut the gasket away from the trim completely. The trim should just lift out in one piece without any deformation. None. If it doesn't, keep cutting cutting. Its very easy to bend, and if you kink it a lot, you'll be buying new trim. And be careful not to gouge the paint under the trim. If you do, seal it up with some POR-15 or similar product.

With all the rain we had this past week, I noticed a small bead of water in the bottom driver side corner of the winshield. I looked at the passenger side and it was damp too. I guess the 17 years was enough for the seal.

Do you guys know if the new seal from Pelican or Performance are OEM German rubber?

Can't say, mine came from Vertex. It had a porsche tag on it.
