Couple upgrades today
Hawk black HPS pads. Man do they screech. Will the noise go away after break in? Are these pads to hard for street use?
Stomski shift coupler and new bushings. Brey Krause strut brace. Oh yea and SS brake lines and super blue. Having fun! Ray B. |
The noise will probably go away when the pads get hot.

Hmmm....I have Hawk HPS pads as well but they don't sqeak. Did you break them in per the instructions in the box?

Changed out the idle control valve also. Now very smooth 850rpm's.
Question, Don't think I'll keep the Hawk blacks in for weekend cruising, going to put the street pads back on. VIR 1-3 April will be my first time at the track. I assume there will be time before tech in the am to swap the pads on the paddock? Or should I drive to the track with the blacks in so as to not frustrate myself at first track event? |
Use the drive down to bed the pads in. Follow the Hawk bedding procedure on the sheet in the bax with the pads.
The Blacks are one of the softer Hawk compounds. Some of the noise you are having may stop after the pads have been properly bedded. |
I used Hawk HPS pads for street and DE use all last year. Fine pads for Green/Blue student. They wear quick but dust very little and gentle on rotors. I got 6 DE weekends out of those pads (green/blue student). No squeak/squeal at all. Like others said, make sure you follow bed-in procedures. The squeal could also be caused from improper piston position if the calipers were recently rebuilt.
BTW: Will probably use these again as they are cheap and don't have to change them out for DE weekends. |
Charlie's got a good point. You should check if your pistons are rotated to the correct angle. The pistons have a notch cut in them so that they press on the leading edge and trailing edge of the pad differentially. If they are in the proper orientation, the leading edge has less pressure than the trailing edge so the pad wear is more even, as the leading edge tends to bite more. If you don't have the pistons oriented properly in the calipers, the pads will chatter and you'll wear the leading edge of the pads unequally to the trailing edge.

Gents, thanx for the input. I'll leave them in and see if they quiet down a bit. So far I don't detect anything that feels like chatter though. Way better stopping power though. I finally feel like my car is in a well sorted stock kind of condition. :D
