Fun run for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed...
Gents,
At some point soon – mid to late April, most likely – there will be a ‘fun run’ for soldiers at the Walter Reed military hospital who are recovering from wounds suffered in battle. Walter Reed is where soldiers badly wounded in combat are brought for recovery and rehabilitation, and their stays often last for weeks and months; many are amputees. They don’t have the opportunity to get out very much and are far away from their homes, families, and military units. I'm working with the hospital to organize a fun run in which we bring a group of soldiers out with us in our passenger seats for a weekend afternoon blast through the countryside, and then take them out for lunch. It would be great to get these guys out of their hospital rooms for an afternoon – they’re almost exclusively young men, and young men love fast cars. I recently proposed the idea to a contact I have at the hospital, and he has received a “go” on it from the chain of command (I just received confirmation a few hours ago). I need to report back to the hospital with a general sense of how many passengers’ seats will show up for the run.
This run will be a unique opportunity to make a gesture of compassion and appreciation for a group of men who have made an immense, and permanent, sacrifice. They deserve our kindness and support. Please email me – noahpollak@yahoo.com – or reply below if you’re interested in participating and wish to be put on the email list for the run. If you send an email, let me know how likely it is that you can make the run, and any dates that you’re unavailable. I should have a concrete date or two within two weeks. This will also be posted on Pelican.
Thanks,
Noah
