Protecting the holes you have just drill on the lid

Hi Everyone,
I just installed a 993 bridge spoiler/third brack light on my Cab last night. I drilled three holes (two for the bolts and one for the wires) into the engine lid. I feel that I need to coat the lips of these holes before the rusts gets to them. What can I use?. Andy

I would buy a can of metal etching primer (~$5 at NAPA) and brush apply it. Then a little touch up paint. If you have any old bike tubes hanging around, I use them as rubber gromets in these apps and finally the best rust stopper - anti-sieze at the hole. If rust breaks through this in 10 years - I'll fix it

For such a small area I would use some Bulldog-it's an adhesive that allows paint to stick to metal without flaking or chipping. It comes in a spray can and it's clear. Apply one coat of this and some paint (touch up). Either that or use some POR15. POR15 is the best option, but if you don't want to wait for the order to arrive, I have some Bulldog that you can use. Give me a call if you need it soon.

Pari, does the POR-15 take touch up paint over it very well? Thought that it was relatively intolerant of topcoat. That said, it will be completely obscured so will not be exposed to UV which I believe is also a problem POR-15 has? just curious.

They sell a primer that goes between the Por15 and paint.
It works well. Will you see this anyway or is it hidden?

Bill, there are different POR15 products, some can take a topcoat. See the above link. I'm not too sure about the UV, but I don't think it is that big of an issue. My neighbor is currently POR 15'ing the undercoating of his 500 hp SS Chevelle.

POR products are great but they have limitations.

The POR-15 paint is UV active. It will not break down and loose rust protective abilities but it will discolor. If it cures, you have to use a tie-coat primer to make another paint stick.

you can top coat POR15 if you do it before it cures. apply the paint, let it set (about 2-4 hours) and then top coat. Any longer and forget about it.

POR will take a top coat without primer if you take off the high gloss finish first. I like to use 600 grit sand paper after two coats.

I'll use POR15. The top of the holes will be covered with the gaskets. The under side of the lid will be exposed but not visible.
