10w40 or 20w50?
Waynes 101 book says 10w40 for colder climates and 20w50 for warmer. Since we have both in Maryland, what should I use. I've always used 10w40 in my sedans.

I just put in 12 qts of Amsoil 5w30, tough call this time of year. I have 20w50 in my honda now and it's waaay too thick for the cold stuff we've had lately. I figure the thin stuff will be good until after the March DE.

Well, since it's protecting your engine I would go with the thinnest stuff possible. Really. Most damage to most cars is at start-up. So, 5-30 for normal or 0-?? if synth. For hard use, go with what ever won't cause your oil pressure guage to go nuts. Racers like thick stuff, but then again start-up isn't what they are worrying about. Those of us with older cars need it to keep the pressure up. If you are tracking 20-50. If not, I wouldn't go higher than 10-40.

5W30 in SC and 20W50 in Honda has got to be backwards unless that is one very old Honda and one incredibly tight SC. Every thing I have read adheres to the cold start light weight protection theory.

LOL Good point. The 3.6 recieved the 5w30, ~230k mile 1.5l civic usually drinks 15w40, but I mistakenly used the 20w50 for the 3l SC. Oh well.

Remember to take the Cool Collar off in the winter so your oil doesn't stay cold!!!
