Carrera Transmission Noise

As you may or may not know, I am new to this forum and new to the Porsche car, so I apologize in advance if this is silly and due to the fact that I am still in the "ohhhhhh, its a Porsche" stage of ownership.

But, my car has a noise that it makes right after I shift. To me it sounds like a vibration noise (I guess most are on a car) that comes from the rear of the car but in front of the engine, why I guessed transmission. It goes away above a certain RPM. I told my mechanic about the noise when I had some other work done to it last week but he said he was unable to recreate the noise. He did say the car appears to be in excellent condition, but the noise still bothers me. Anyone have any ideas as to what this might be?

The only thing I can come up with since (I have not driven the car since so I have not yet tested this theory) is that I may be driving the car incorrectly. I usually shift at 3-3.5K when cold and to shift 3.5K+ when hot. But even if I was shifting too low, should there be a noise other than engine grumbling?

Any insight would be most appreciated.

Clutch release bearing grumbling?

When do you hear it? clutch in or out? under load, no load? does it change sound with rpm? change sound with speed? Have you checked the gear lube level? Grumbling, humming, screetching, whining noise?

G-50s had some problems with clutch release arms (R. L. Engine Drop time, fix that G-50 for the man :!: )

Don't worry about shifting to soon, Jim, me and others routinely shift only after we hit the rev limiter :shock:

Mike, I have an '87 Carerra. If you want to come over to Alexandria, we can take both cars out for a comparison.

Top end run :?: I'm so there :twisted: It's been 2 or 3 weeks since my last talk with "the man" 8)

Mike, nothing wrong with short shifting before the motor gets warm.
You may want to ask Mr. Riley how he likes working on 944's or how many of his P cars are currently, uh, operational? You may want to ask Mr. Richards how he is progressing with his engine rebuild.
Do you hear the noise only when the car has been sitting over night, everytime you drive the car, only in a straight line, only around a turn at slow speed?
The noise could be the throw out bearing. When you hear the noise try pushing the clutch pedal in and out and see if there's a change in the noise.
It could be a normal transmission noise until you drive the car a couple miles and it gets lubricated.

And for the record I reeeeally don’t like working on 944s :!:
And that even after flushing my friend's 944 track car out of the shop last weekend with a brand new set of rod bearings, and a half case of oil filters :shock:
And just for the other side of the record (45s of course) my cars are being “upgraded” :arrow: I’m just doing them all at the same time :roll:

Rev limiter? :?

Mike - I've got an 88 Carerra that "grumbles" if I lug it. By lug it I mean shift into 3rd so that 3rd is engaging with less than 2,000RPM. If I then accelerate, the tranny grumbles. I've read somewhere that G50's will do that and it is a problem. But it's not one I'd want to fix, given that the last time I had the tranny rebuilt cost me about $6K. I'll bet Matt dM knows what the problem is.
