Ultimate tool needed -- a garage.

Hi! I no longer lurk, as I've just last week bought my first Porsche -- an 84 911 Targa. I love it! Soon I will know her true name...

Runs quite well, except for an embarassing leakdown number on the #5 cylinder, and a number of miscellaneous leaks. I've done a bit of engine work on past vehicles -- old Mustangs and old BMW Motorcycles -- so I'm doing ok for tools and gumption, but I've got no garage. I intend to rectify that problem in 6 months or so, but I thought a nice February project would be to drop the 200k motor and rebuild it.

Anybody know where I could rent or borrow some garage space for two or three weeks sometime this winter? I'm in Alexandria, but I'd drive a pretty far distance for an enclosed space with a concrete floor and a 6 foot wide door.

Will

PS -- I've got a pickup truck if somebody has a garage full of junk that needs to be hauled off so that there would be room.......

Will: Welcome to the Board. I live off of Quaker Lane; where in Alexandria are you?

I don't have a garage to offer, but a couple years ago a friend of mine rented a ground floor unit at the self-storage facility at the east end of Eisenhower Ave. I think it runs about $350/ month. He was able to fit a compressor, space heater, engine hoist and other things into the space, along with the car, tranny, etc., but it was admittedly 'cozy.'

Will - welcome. One more lurker de-lurking. Wow - owned the car for less than a month and already planning an engine drop and rebuild? I think you'll fit in just fine around here.

Got some pictures?

Dave - $350/month for a storage unit? Holy crap that is expensive! I haven't rented one in a while, but I seem to remember them going for < $200 for a garage sized one. I think I need to start investing in some storage rental properties now that they're going for that much!

A buddy of mine has a shop that might be interested in working something out with you. It's a regular automotive shop so there are always jobs coming and going, but there seems to usually be some room. It wouldnt be free, but he is reasonable. Catch is, he's near BWI. If you are interested let me know and I'll talk to him about it.

Welcome to the bbs Will, as a rule, all new members must post pictures of their P-car. So let's see that targa! :)

progress....

Thanks for all of the replies! I'll get a picture up of my white car as soon as I give her a good washing. And, of course, as soon as I break down and buy a digital camera.

I'm going this weekend to look at a garage in the Cap. Hill area -- it may be a little tight at 9X13, got to see. If it doesn't work out, I'll be following up. If it does work out, pelicaners will be seeing a post for an engine drop party in a month or so!
