NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH....

Wait till the end.... Think you dont need safety equipment when on the track?

Holy crap. That was scarry. I though fuel cells helped prevent stuff like that from happening.. guess not. Let's hear it for Nomex.

Had not seen the end of that clip before, so its good to see that the cup car driver survived. The second car fared much worse. Sad, and slightly crazy to run in those conditions.

Apparantly the driver of the ferrari was burned very badly and will no longer be able to drive. The Safety crews took FOREVER to get there. You can see them not approaching the porsche till well into 20 seconds after the crash. The fuel bladder and/or lines ruptured in the porsche and sprayed the fuel all over the ferrari and when it contacted....

The Ferarri drive won a judgement against the track and the race promoter. Someone posted the article on Pelican last week. Frightening!

Very nasty incident. Great to hear that the Ferrari driver survived the crash and his burns. Nasty.

Since we are on a carnage theme here this morning, take a look at this from Speed coverage of the Rolex series earlier this year.

Rolex Rainstorm

Mike Levitas was at one of our races a few weeks later. He said the rain came down without warning in biblical quantities. Nobody had time to slow down before the turn. Kevin Buckler got the worst of it - first into the wall, had enough time to unbuckle his harnesses and prepare to get out of the car, then BAM - collected by another car slamming in at speed.

No injuries from this incident.

Styrofoam, crumple zones, safety cages and luck. I wonder if styrofoam barriers would have helped in the race in Japan, the Porsche wouldn't have traveled so far and ended up in the path of the Ferrari. Those were amazing and frightening.

WOW Tony - had not seen that incident before. Then again, have not really been paying attention to the Rolex series this year.

Forrest Gumps mother "stupid is as stupid does...." Why were they even moving in that fog? Let us hope that PCA DE organizers have an inch more basic intellegence than these guys. Or, maybe I don't get the point!

If you look carefully at the Japan footage you can see the fog appears to be very local. Also, I saw a car swerving back & forth to warm tires like on a warm up lap. The Porsche comes from cross track right behind him. The Ferrari (thought it was a Firero/Pontiac at first) also came from cross track.
