So what's it worth

Ok, my turn for a 'What's it worth' thread :D

There's a rusty, crusty '73 911E for sale in the area. Here's the specifics:

The bad
-been sitting outside, uncovered for 8-10 years
-rust on all removable panels (doors, fenders, hood, tail)
-rusty rockers
-rust in the inner fender by each footwell
-gas tank support area rusted
-engine doesn't run, no plugs = lots of water in engine
-Cookie cutter wheels
-rust on windshield cowl

The good
-has a recaro looking seat (1 only).
-interior is amazingly nice except for crack in dash
-has steel S spoiler - in good shape
-has decent chrome trim headlight rings
-no dents
-no rust around torsion tube mounts
-S gauges and trim - in good cond.
-All glass is good
-Original radio
-915 trans

It may be able to be salvaged for a track car depending on the extent of rust. They guy wants $1,500 which is waaay too much.
If I could pick it up for $500-$800 or so I could part it out and make my money back. What's the value of the engine in the car (parts value). My wife is not too crazy about me parting this thing out at the house but if I could get it for cheap it could be worth it.

Thoughts?

I’d don’t think I’d tow it off the property for less than $100. Motor should be MFI, but even with webers it would almost certainly be next to worthless except for cases. A friend bought a 2.2 that had been left out about that long w/aircleaner in place & still had to practically cut one of the barrels off just to get it to turn over. Only good parts were 14” Fuchs, seats, real nice set of door “pockets”, miscellaneous interior. Did finally sell the non sunroof top for $75. Try tuning the engine over by hand, if no go, just say no.

Trans might be worth $4/500, oil tank $200, cookies $??? (if all 7s). Small brakes, through body sway bars, heater motor, gas tank (?), lights, I/O door handles, gauges - $4/500. But would take a while to sell.

$300-$500 is about right. Anything more it would not be worth the time to part it out, IMO. My guess is that since the body is trashed, engine parts are probably your best source of income - maybe the MFI stuff.

Dan, i don't know about you, but that information is enough to prompt me to run away from this deal  . RUST city :( .
Although as Dave and Chris said, if you can get it for a couple hundred$$, it might be worth parting out.

sunroof?????

SEEMS LIKE A car that you just want the interior for.
i mean, ssssssure the car is straight, but the RUST RUST RUST. doesnt sound promising to fixup. unless you just got yer drivers license...and you've always wanted a pcar..

does it ave a sunroof????? (i'd be up for that!)

doesnt steel fin =more tail weight?

and is it worth your while?...parting all that out?

well, if you've never had a parts car....then YES! um, for $300 it'd be a good deal. if not...let the guy part it out himself. are you a parts dealer? of course ALLLL old porsches are good.

note: spouses tend to not like parts cars. If they do, then theyre a keeper!(uh, the spouse...). Never go beyond normal tolerance levels! Parting parts cars=good. permanent resident parts cars=bad.

I think he's referring to the chin spoiler.

doh-k!

oh yeh.
my not reading good. thanks chris!

hmm, I was hoping that maybe there would be something in there that might be worth something. I would love to just pick the parts off that I want and leave the shell for the owner to crunch. The prior owner just abonded it after leaving the airbox off and letting water into the MFI. The shop never could get it to run right and he basically abonded it after that. It's a shame to see this car rot given it would be a nice little non-sunroof coupe. Oh yeah, and it has one really nice door pocket! I want that door pocket!!

Maybe I'll just wait for him to really want to give it away and then I'll just tow it at no cost to him : )

BTW, There are a few nice 911's for sale at the Auto Gallery in Leesburg (1984, 1988, 1989) in very nice shape. Two targas and one coupe. The coupe has had the top end rebuilt, sport exhaust and cup wheels.

I know what car you are talking about I think...red? You think that's a shame, you oughta see the 356 he's had sitting there even longer. That's a REAL crime! A real dust to dust, ashes to ashes story... :?

BTW - I'd run from both cars.

Dan, if you get it I have a serious interest in the motor. Let me know if we can work something out. :)
