A/C Bracket with certs
I am in the (long) process of removing the muffler and A/C compressor and bracket so I can replace the cam lines and oil sending unit.
Charlie - I was able to drill off the rounded muffler nut. The maintenance hist on the car indicates the A/C bracket has recerts. I guess this means the mounting threads to hold the compressor were stripped at one point. Question: do the certs make the bracket better than new or should I look for a replacement bracket ? |

I, based on no scientific evidence, would imagine that that's probably still OK to use unless the certs were falling out. I just removed mine and the reinstall was such a frustrating PITA that I can understand how it might get damaged throughout the years. I'm sure mine took a little bit of a beating trying to rethread the back nut for the compressor - arrrgh! I doubt you have a problem with your certs. Here's a trick I used on the reinstall - take the silver bracket off the fan shroud. Attach it to the black bracket using the "inside-hex" nut and reinstall in the car as a whole unit. You may want to leave the inside-hex nut 1-2 turns loose. It took me a 1/2 hour to unthread that thing with an allen key and a box wrench. |
Thanks Steve. Hope the certs are good.
Did you have troble getting the bracket off ? I have an 86 Carerra. Looking under the car, there is one bolt at the top which looks easy to get to. There is one at the bottom which is mostly covered by the muffler bracket. There are probably a bunch on top too. Have not had the chance to get after them yet and may not be able to untill Sunday. Cant wait. |
