So it runs but...
The oil temp and gauges is high. Like uncomfortable high. When I touch the lines going to the external thermostat they are hot. Thermostat feels warm. Oil lines from the external thermostat to the front cooler are both cool to the touch. As in not warm at all. Can a thermostat just stop working from sitting too long? I didn’t mess with the thermostat at all but I did not plug the lines to the thermo while the engine was out and being rebuilt.
Once it fired I let it run at 2k rpm for 20 mins and shut it down. It smoked a little but and then after 20 mins when I let off it settled at a pretty steady 1k idles Then took the man child around the block and my wife around the block (2 different trips). I had a small leak from a valve cover gasket, but all else seems fine. It’s parked now but it running too hot has me worried. Thanks |
Numbers! Get a cheap IR gun and read the directions that come with it. Report back what, when and where. Motor hot and your hand hot not same.
Yes a thermostat can jam. do another round of testing with care. see 250 anywhere oil cooled shut down. |
x100. 140 degF will feel very fuching hot to your hand (and will cook it to medium rare). But the earl will laugh at 140 F.

Not to swipe the thread...a question for the experts which may help. In normal operations with thermostat operating correctly, is one of the two lines coming out of the thermostat open or are both closed until oil reaches correct temp?

from pelican Temp based valve directs flow forward to the lines or back the oil tank |
Thanks..meaning they are both closed off from the rest of the system by the aux cooler thermostat valve. like a thermostat for a coolant system does the aux cooler thermostat valve open gradually as car warms up or is it a one temperature open/shut device?

Curiously I went out this morning, and turning the key to on, but not cranking the car, causes both gauges to go all the way up. So the car is stone cold from sitting overnight but the garages are showing it is overheating. I’m assuming then it is a wiring issue and not a oil cooler issue.
As far as touching the lines yesterday, the ones going to the external thermostat were warm. I could touch them with the back of my hand and they were warm. The lines exiting the external thermostat were both cool all the way down to the cooler and back. |
Sounds like you have an electrical issue.

So I think I found the culprit. Neither the oil temp or the oil pressure sensors appear to be hooked up. As in there is no connections from those sensors to the car. I assume I just messed those when making the connections. But where are those located on the wiring harness? On the fuel filter side where the harness comes into the engine bay I do not have any connections that would reach to those sensors. Are those connections located on the right hand side behind the air filter?
