WTB Race Car
The green 993 is officially dead and gone. :bang:
I definitely want another caged car - DE or Racing, and prefer a prepped car to be rules compliant. ;) I am weighing Vintage, E class, Spec Boxster, and whatever a 997/Cayman S (2009+) run in. I am even considering a C5 Vette. I am second or third in line for a GTB1 Cayman, but I expect the first guy is likely to buy it later this week. I want to be able to run pump gas for DE (reflash/whatever), and would like to keep consumable costs a tertiary consideration, not Cup cars with $10k/100 hr rebuilds, for example. Now that I am in Red, I would like to aim for sub 1:22 capable cars - I will pass on a 944 for now - and while faster than that time is ‘nice,’ it isn’t absolutely required. I am not committed to a specific class, and I am even considering a 996 GT3 with a side order of SSM. If you know of well prepped cars that you think are worth considering, please let me know. Finding slim pickings that don’t have something that is a question. Up to mid 60’s or 70, but would win major points at home for coming well below that. |
I have a 99 boxster that's a good spb candidate, but it's stock, you'd have to get it built. You could easily be under 30k all in.

Spec Boxster (SPB) is a good choice for a first race car, with some of the lowest operating expenses possible for a Porsche. However, you won't be breaking 1:22s in SPB; the current track record at SP Main for SPB is 1:23.383.
The going rate for a mostly-ready-to-run SPB is around $30K, and they don't last too long on the market. If you can do most of the work of building a stock Boxster into a race car, you can build an SPB for under $30K, but the trade-off is your time and labor. Or, you can contact a shop like Atlanta Speedwerks to build a car for you, which will run $35K-$45K, depending on options. |
Not to sidetrack this, but are you salvaging anything from the old car? Were you able to pull anything out of it, or buy it back for parting?

Broad spectrum of choices.. and considering the vette implies willingness for other brands.. what about BMW?
Who do you want to race with? PCA? SCCA? NASA? HSR? VSSCA? Imho, best bang for the buck is still Spec Miata or SRF (spec race ford) As for sub 1:22, doesn't the boy do that in his 944? |

But I agree definitely decide who you want to race with before buying anything. Also not trying to shoot it down but I know a lot of people that spend cup car money running gtb1 cars... or that's at least how it seems. |

If you want to race, go to BMW.
If you are set on Pcar, I would suggest SPC. Do a search on Rennlist. I think there were a couple of cars that if still available, could be had in the $40s. Good Hands got out of GTB before it got too expensive, but he ran both GTB and 99x Cup and would know the cost comparison. I think these days you will need about the same running budget for GTB vs an early Cup. If I were 10 years younger and wanted to race Pcar, 996 Cup would be were I'd go between the two classes. BUT SERIOUSLY, if you want to race, go to BMW. |
