Repair of Minor Wheel Damage

One of the wheels on the family car suffered some curb rash. Instead of sending it out for professional refinishing, I opted to repair it myself.

Here is the damaged wheel:

I sanded it down a bit and cleaned it with paint thinner. Doesn't look so bad in the picture but it was annoying to me to see it

I applied a bit of spot putty to fill in the scratches:

Here I've sanded down the spot putty:

Here's the first shot of primer. After I shot the primer, I quickly cleaned off the excess overspray surrounding the scratch:

Here's a shot after I applied the Wurth's Silver paint. I applied it using the same technique as the primer. Spray then wipe of excess:

Here's a shot after the Wurth's Clear Coat was applied:

And the final results......very close to matching though not perfect. You can't really tell the area is toched up unless you're looking from less than a foot away. All in all I'm satisfied. Being 19" wheels, I have a feeling I'll be doing touchups once a year.

Thanks to John for the paint![/img]

Vu:

Good job, they look nice.

I R & R'd my 15" BBS basketweaves on the iX using the same Wurth products. Although, I had a shop strip them and "true" them up for about $100 a piece (including adding material) before I refinished. :D

Exactly one week later my then fiance now wife CURBED both R-side wheels! I haven't had the "desire" to do the repair you just did on the wheels and probably won't in the near future.

Those Kosei R1 16x7.5" wheels look pretty good though .... Hmmmm.

Nice job Vu. I have some curb rash on the 993 from the PO (no, really!) and I'd like to fix it like you did. I need to find out what paint is appropriate for the factory turbo twist wheels. What's the spot putty you referred to? Thanks!

Great work Vu! I can't even tell where it is on the picture.

Looks good Vu. Like Jon said, I can't even tell where the curb rash is on that last pic.

It's just typical automotive body filler that comes in a red toothpaste like tube. You don't use much, and I have a lot left. You're welcome to use it for your repairs.

Here's where I learned the technique:
