Which rear shocks should I go with?
 

What's the consensus on which rear shocks to go with? I fiugre since the engine is out I might as well replace them now while it is good and easy.

Currently the car has orange (which I believe are Koni's ????) shocks but I don't know if they are original or not (car has 97k original miles). Any opinions on the differences between Bilsteins, Boge and Koni ?

I'm going to do some searching on Pelican but thought I'd through it out to our local experts first :wink:

Never heard a bad thing about bilstiens. I have sports on the Carrera and the standard HD version on the SC(front and rear). No complaints.

What spec Tbars and sways are you running?

Both the T-bars and sways are stock and I don't envision upgrading anytime soon. If I were to upgrade down the road it wouldn't be anything dramatic.

No reason to go with Boge.

Let's test them on the bench and adjust them up some if possible. If it turns out that you aren't satisfied, then replacing all 4 is the way to go.

I believe that you have green front strut houseing so that means Bilstien, Boge, or Koni's could be up front. If they are original, then they will be Bilstein.

Putting Bilstein in the rear would change ride height because they are gas charged . . . . and you know what will happen once that happens :wink:

The good stock setup is Bilstein SP front and HD rear [check Pelican - I might have these reversed!]. Marc is right - Bilstein is the plan even if it MIGHT give you an opportunity to explore ride height/corner balance territory.

Doug, when you were rebuilding your front suspension, do you recall what inserts you had in your front struts? If Koni's, I'd recommend you stay with Koni's in back. If not, then I'd recommend a migration to Bilsteins (HD fronts / Sport rears).

I'm running Bilstein HD both front and rear. I wish I had done sports in the rear. I believe the only difference is valving between the SP and the HD. The fact that you can send the shocks back to Bilstein and have them revalved or rebuilt is a big plus, especially if your thinking of doing some suspension upgrades down the road.

I have Koni single adjustables on my '76. '62 and '90 BMW (waiting to install). I have run Bilstein / Boge / Sachs in all of the cars and for the price, I like the adjustability of the Konis.

Koni NA (and many other vendors) will rebuild / revalve to your specs should you need to go there.

I am condsidering doing the same shock replacement when I lower my SC. I spoke with Charlie not to long ago and he advised me to go with the Bilstein HD and Sport. He also said it is recommended to replace the torsion bars if you are replacing the shocks. I am planning on buying new hollow torsion bars when I do this project.
