Anyone have some old license plates?

This would get moved to OT on Pelican or Rennlist, but I think some of you may identify with this.

In my recent travels to Austria, I made it to Braunau am Inn, which is where Hitler was born. They don't advertise that fact too much and so the house was a bit tough to find. Anyway, while there, I stopped by a small pizza joint, a stone's throw away from the infamous birthplace, to have some lunch. While there I noticed several US license plates on the wall along with some old poster ads for Marlboro, Chevy, Corvette, T-Bird, etc. I sort of relished the irony of American pop culture invading the very birthplace of such evil. Then I stuck up a conversation with the owner and he said he had picked up the decorations at flea markets and they had cost some bucks. I know US license plates are pretty popular collector's items in some Euro. countries. So I took a business card from him and said I'd mail him some of my old plates. I felt like it was doing my small part to piss on Hitler's grave and spruce up this guy's shop a bit.

Trouble is, when I got home, I could not find my stack of old license plates. I didn't give this guy my business card and so he's not gonna nag me for the stuff. But this was 3 wks. ago and I'd like to get a package off to him soon. So if any of you guys have any old license plates collecting dust in your garage, I'd like to pick them up and send them to this guy. Maybe there'll be a huge outpouring and we can cover all his walls.

Anyone? Buehler? Thanks.

I've got an old one I was going to throw away. I'll bring it to the next meet for you.

I got busted a few years ago by the insurance fraud division in Maryland for not returning the plates off a truck I sold. When I sold the truck I cut them up.

They wanted proof that I sold the truck so they could be sure I wasn't riding around without insurance. The Truck was sold to a leasing company
In Virginia so I guess since it didn't get retitled in MD so MD had no way of knowing that it was sold.

A few years later I bought a used car in VA. I got temporary tags from the dealer. They couldn't title it in MD since it needed MD inspection. They paid for the inspection but I had to get it done. When I went to MVA to get the new MD title and tags. They wanted to know what happened to my truck. They made me go sit in the dunce corner for a few hours to speak with the insurance fraud division. In a nutshell I had to present proof of the sale, before they would let me get the permanent tags for the new, used car. (Huge fines pending!) I want back to the leasing co. luckily they were able to find the 3 year old record and they typed up a bill of sale.
(Probably had to get it notorized.)

Anyway, learn from me they ain't jokin. You have to return old tags in MD.
I don't know how long ago that they started this regulation, but it's been probably 5-6 years since then.

Good luck Rick! I'm sure you will be able to find a pile of older tags to send your guy.
I have one old tag I'm keeping. 63E
Can anyone identify this? It's not a Porsche.

.

Apparently that's an issue in NC as well. The PO was pretty concerned about me having her tags for 3 weeks while I got stuff sorted out here at the DMV. They threw me out for not having the mileage certification and a bill of sale so I have to go back on the PO for that. (Good thing I still had her tags). The take away is, I am now LEGAL in VA (except I can't attach the front tag)!!! :D :D :D :D

Of course, it's kinda crappy and I'm sick, so I don't feel much like celebrating.

...and I just recenty cleaned out my garage in preparation for the snow. I finally cut up and trashed a stack of old plates that were collecting dust from different states (New York, Florida, South Carolina, Hawaii). Sorry!

I have to say I'm not sure I'd want some dude in Austria caught on their local episode of cops trying to outrun the law with a pair of my old plates on their car.

I have about 150 in my collection - how's that for being a complete car geek? The oldest is a porcelain enamel on steel PA plate from 1912. I'll look sometime to see if there are any I want to give away. Talk to my wife - she'd give them all away if she could.
