930 brakes don't squeal! Yeah!
As anyone on the last fun run can attest, my brakes WERE LOUD. With everything being new/rebuilt I couldn't figure it out. I also heard differing viewpoints if the 4 piston calipers had to be oriented at the 20 degrees as the 2 pistons do. Some said yes, others said no. Well, the naysayers were wrong. I blew the pistons out turned them, put them back, and now my brakes are quiet as they should be! There is a slight squeal when in reverse, but not going forward. I can certainly live with the amount they do it in reverse! I now have to give Doug at VCI a call because they are the ones that rebuilt my calipers. . . .

I agree with Clayton. Charlie and I oriented the pucks on mine to 20 degrees and they are virtually silent. Metal-Master pads.

As someone who was behind Clayton for a while on the last Fun Run saying the squeak was load is a HUGE UNDERSTATEMENT. I'm just glad the glass in my car didn't shatter
Congrats on getting it fixed. |
As someone who was JUST IN FRONT OF CLAYTON  at the last fun run, I'm glad to "hear" about this. Now, when approaching those corners, Clayton can "RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP"!

We just got back from a week in Newport. It was very relaxing, to say the least. Well, all but the ride home that is! We hit every form of weather possible, I think. The AWD of the Volvo held it's own. SUV's and trucks were all over the place, but we never faltered. Once it warmed up and started to rain I think I set some new speed records for Volvo trying to make up some time!
Anyway, on to the real point of my post. I called Doug at VCI to discuss what he could do for me because it was obvious that the orientation of the pucks was the source of the noise. He started off by saying 'I won't do anything'. Now, I'm not one to slam ANYONE'S name without good reason, but I would have at least posted it here (maybe Pelican, too) if that is the road he chose. His rationale was that he wasn't sure that was the source of the squeal. Also, these pistons should be parallel to the edge as they were, but they had the lower portion of the piston facing the incorrect direction. I now have them at 20 degrees, but that shouldn't make a difference. They are now quiet. Anyway, when I said that word of mouth went a long way, he slowly changed his tune saying "well, what can I do?" Anyway, I commend him for making the offer and acknowldeging the fact that the pistons were incorrectly positioned. It doesn't make up for the fact of how much time was spent, swapping out pads, installing and removing calipers multiple times, bleeding brakes multiple times, etc. He ended up agreeing to credit a portion of the labor for the rebuild. That to me was all I could really expect. Just thought I would share. |
Some times people are a little slow when it comes to realizing what's in their own best interests. A happy customer does a business good, but a p.o.'ed customer has the potential to do a lot more damage. Glad you were able to encourage the shop to do the right thing and make some ammends.

I run the performance friction pads and the make alot of noise when I am not at the track. What pads do you have on?
|
I started with factory pads after the 'refresh' to rotors/hats, and calipers. Then I switched to Ferodo because I was told it must be the pads. After rotating the pistons I am now convinced that the factory pads would not sqeal, either. Fortunately, I did not throw them away!

I'll have to double check the pad install on my 930. I replaced all the pads about 6 months ago and thought I had everything aligned. But one rear and one front squeal like crazy. Thanks for the tip.
