87 Carrera help
Hello guys. Strange, I posted this an hour or so ago. No matter how many times I refresh, no post. Oh well.
I pulled decided to replace the cap and rotor on the 87 tonight. The rotor was a little stuck, so I had to tug on it a little. When the rotor came off, so did the top of the distributor. :( Luckily I found the 2 little springs attached to the weights and put it back together. Thing is, the springs dont seem to be that firmly attached to the weights. It almost looks like something broke off. Any ideas? Anyone going to be around this weekend and will let me look at their Carrera distributor? I posted this to pelican too, the link has a picture of my sitution. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...hreadid=137567 Thanks for any suggestions! Chris |
Chris, I don't have a Carerra; however, your welcome to come over today (Sat.) and look at the distributors on the 73E and the 993.

Chris,
Those springs are for the mechanical advance and are attached to weights that swing out as the RPM's increase, advancing the timing. There should 2 springs attached to 2 weights. Check out the other side of the distrib. and see if its similarly attached. From my motorcycle days, I remember these springs not being very securely attached (kind of a slip fit over a post, similar to your picture), but they did not slip off/out either. Hopefully others have more input. |
Thanks for the reply. Both sides are the same. I'll see if I can get ahold of a new distributor today to see what's what. Of course I was planning on driving the car down to VIR in a couple days.

Chris,
You are welcome to come over and check out how the distributor on my '86 is put together. Call ahead for directions -- I'll pm you my #. |
Thanks for the advice guys. Thanks to John for the show and tell. More bonding time with the car today. :)

It's your own fault. Why would anyone in their right mind EVER own an '87 Carrera? At least I never had any problems with while I had her.

No kidding. This weekend I was looking at 2 911's in the garage that didnt run right. The SC needs some CIS tweaking and the Carrera was in pieeces. Not to mention the Carrera fuel door cable broke too, fun fun.
