Windshield Installation Question
 

Hi Everybody,

Well, I finally got around to replacing the dash on the Red Baron. I got a new
gasket for the windshield and cleaned everything up. Does anyone have any recommendations for glass
installers in the Gaithersburg Md. area ? Preferably I would like someone who works on the p-cars. All replies appreciated...

PS - If anyone needs any help or advice on replacing a dash on
an 78-83 SC i'd be happy to pass on what the process was ect.

I have used That Glass Place a couple of times. Great work and they have a bunch of experience with P cars.

They will come to you with a mobile unit but not sure they go as far a Gaithersburg. They did come to Falls Church for me.

x2 on That Glass Place. They replaced the windshield in my Targa at my house in Alexandria.

Rockville-Gaithersburg MOCO area please let me know, I really want to get someone who works on these types of cars. I guess i'll keep looking, thanks again...

If you're patient it isn't that complicated to do yourself. Even though it helps to have 2-3 people, I have installed several by myself. I've NEVER broken one ( factory glass ) by myself, but have broken 2 with other help. They tend to try and put too much pressure on the glass.

I'll also tell you to get ONLY factory windshield and rubber. I have tried several after market/factory combos and in no way do any fit well and the aftermarket glass is typically thinner and more prone to breaking. Rubber are either oversized, or undersized. Some to the point they wouldn't even go on they were so tight or so loose they fell right off even with the trim in place

Thanks Scotty for the reply, I cleaned the channel out pretty good, there was a ton of
black adhesive that took awhile to get out. I though about doing myself but was worried it
would leak ect. Q- do you need to put adhesive in the channel ? I'm thinking this is an after market glass as I thought the channel looked so sloppy to me. Any way to tell factory
glass ? The glass looks to be in good shape I did get a factory gasket. Another Q- does the trim go in before or after the wind screen is installed and ? Thanks again for the help...

I installed all the glass in my car. The windshield was the easiest by far. Factory glass for this era SC would be a Sekurit windshield, but good luck finding one. When I bought mine the factory replacement was made by Sigla. It fit fine, but the quality of the glass itself leaves a lot to be desired. It's soft and pits really easy.

I bought new glass, new gasket and new trim. Once the trim is bent up, it's pretty tough to get back into shape. Install the gasket on the glass, then trim into the gasket. Spray the gasket with soapy water and wrap a section of rope around the gasket until it crosses. (I soaked the rope in soapy water too IIRC). Get some glass carrying suction cups from Harbor Freight, install and have someone put gentle pressure on while you pull the rope. My wife helped me with mine and we were done in about 30 mins.

Banner glass came to my place for a windshield replacement a few years ago, no issues.

In MOCO, I had someone replace the windshield on my 2011 Ford Van. He travels to the vehicle. I watched while he did the work, and was rather impressed with his attention to detail. I don't believe he's a P-car expert, but I'm guessing he would do a good job anyway. Precision Auto Glass; his name is Doug, and he seems to prefer being contacted by text messaging (301-943-9374). He was recommended to me by the Service Advisor I've been working with for nearly 25 years at my local Ford dealer.

Ben would love me to get my new-old-stock Sekurit windshield out of his room (hmm...I might have moved it). Was considering to offer it with the race car, but make an offer if you want the unobtainable (and more chip-resistant) part for your car!
