Welding & Fabrication Class: Jan 23 2016

If you are interested in learning to weld or want to improve your welding skills Chaos Fab Shop is holding a day long class on welding and fabrication in January that may be of interest to you. After owning and using a MIG set up for over 10 years I thought I was good with it. I took this class back in 2013 and my skills went up exponentially. I highly recommend it for the non professional, "hobby" welder.

The class covers:
Safety
Equipment Selection and Prep
Material Selection and Prep
Engineering and Design
Welding practice, a lot of welding practice.

The emphasis of this class is welding skills. You will prep material to weld and then under the watchful and helpful eyes of highly skilled welders you will run MIG machines (TiG is a seperate course) for several hours. You will learn what you did right, what you did wrong, get a lot of help improving your technique and get to watch other attendees weld and learn too so you can learn from their success and their mistakes.

While most of the folks attending are from the Jeep world and are interested in building heavy stuff like cages, axles, armor and skids, the skills are equally applicable to lighter materials like repairing the sheet metal of unibody structure (I got real good at welding thin to thick after this class) along with adding tabs and brackets for cages and suspension mounts. Let AK Whatley (Chaos Fab owner) know you are with Potomac Porsche and he will make sure the materials you work with in the class match with what you expect to be working on when you get home.

Here is a link for signing up if interested.

This is a great idea and I'd love to go, but I'm not sure if the timing is right on this one. Any idea how often do offer these classes?

AK usually does this class twice a year but its not on a fixed schedule.

Winter is desert racing and rock crawling season. I am surprised he is holding this one so late. In the past its been a November/December class. By mid spring his shop is filling up with last minute builds for the summer. The shop is moving to larger facility not long after this class so he may not offer it again until summer or fall. I am pretty certain it will come around again in 2016 but I have no idea when.

Not much help, other than to suggest if you can find a way to make January work go for it. AK will be with us this weekend on the Fall Off Road Drive and Dine. I will ask him about it then and post back.
