master cylinder/brake fluid

After attendng the Curry tech session this Saturday and Kurts great brake fluid change demo, I went home and changed the front brake pads. No problems.

I tried to siphon some brake fluid out of my 1986 master brake cylinder overflow container and was stumped because I could not figure out how to remove the filter like cup do-hickey, which is able to spin in place and has a little vertical rod which floats up or down depending on fluid level and makes contact to, I guess, let you know if the level is too low.

I do not want to flush the brake system or remove calipers without first siphoning off some fluid but cant do this without getting the 'filter' out. Is there some trick to removing it without destroying it ?

It pulled straight out on my '87 Targa.

George:

The strainer pulls straight up. You can get your fingernail between the lip of the reservior and the filter.

Another thing to do is put a broom stick or other piece of wood against the brake pedal held in place by the seat placed in the middle position. Slide the seat up so the pedal is pushed in about an inch and no fluid will drain out when you remove the calipers (or at least only a little bit).

Thanks Marc. I tried pulling it up with needle nose pliers and it wouldnt budge. Other 86 owner suggests it 'snaps' into place and to try 'levering' it out. Will try that.

I took the car yesterday to get emmissons and registration and although it passed, the hydrocarbons are borderline. At 25mph 130 of 130. I guess it could be running rich. Will start another post.
