Targa Hardtop Install

This is more of an invitation to watch as opposed to a request for help. I got the fiberglass hardtop from JMPRO. It appears to be a relatively simple installation. I'll be doing it Saturday a.m, starting around 10. No need to RSVP--I've got a cooler full of beer leftover from my son's grad party. Sorry Richard, no Pabst, you'll have to bring your own. Basic directions to my house are simple if you know where Rte. 28 is--

From Fairfax/Reston area:

take 28 towards Manassas.

Stay on 28 all the way into town. It becomes a oneway street at the fire station (old train wheel fire bell out front). Crossing streets after that point are East, Main, Battle, then West. There is a light at Main. Get in right lane after light and take right onto West.
Next stop sign is Portner. Cross Portner and next crossing intersection is Beauregard. My house, 9240 Beauregard will be facing you on left front at that point. Most identifiable feature is large wraparound porch, or "veranda" for our 996 drivers. House color is light bue-gray.

Total time from 28/66 is 10-15 min.

From Fauquier/south of Manassas: 66E to 234 bypass, get off bypass onto 28N. Lights at Godwin, Wellington, Stonewall, then Grant. Cross Grant Ave (234 bus.) and take left onto West. Stay on West across Church (28S) and the rest is the same.

I have two driveways--one on Beauregard, one on West. If they're both full, street partking should be done on Beauregard. You can pull a little onto the yard. The garage is on the West St. side.

Call me if you have questions about directions or get lost.

Dan, you should bring your car and new top over to my place. Then you can help me with turbo tie rods after installing your JMPRO top.

Jim--

You shouldn't need any help. Simply unscrew the old tie rods from the steering rack.

targa911man-
You are right around the corner from my house. I'll try to be there around 10-ish.

Dan, I hope your targa top installation is going well. BTW, I separated the tie rod ends from the struts (yesterday) and simply unscrewed the tie rods today...total elapsed time less than 20 minutes. I owe it all to you.  :P

Re: Targa Hardtop Install

Jim--

Glad I could help.

The hardtop is just about finished and looks great. Vove stopped by for a while and helped tear down the old top. He lives pretty close by. Has nice (red) C4 coupe. I doubt he'll be getting a targa anytime soon. The teardown was more difficult than I had hoped because there were several frozen screws. It was all original and had acquired some rust over the years. I think I am going to leave the gelcoat finish on for now and paint it when it gets dull. Jerry's instructions were a little abbreviated which caused me to have to backtrack a couple of times. Can't fault him though because he did an incredible job in producing this top. I reused my skin to line the inside--just trimmed it to fit and glued it on. I'm letting the side seals dry overnight. Tomorrow all I have to do is drill 4 holes for the center bracket screws and it's done. I've taken a few pictures and will post on Pelican tomorrow after it's on.

Sounds great, Dan. And sorry about the gloating. I'm real lucky that we learned a lot doing it the first time on your car.

Dan-
Glad I was some type of help to your targa top project. Wanted to stay longer and help you out, but I had to make it to the office to finalize some work. I must admit, I was kinda worry when you used that flat head screwdriver that's older than me to pop those little hinges out after sanding the stripped screws out(I had a bad experience once). :D

Dan:

I would like to see the finished product as my top is on the way so to speak.

Should have come your way rather than going to Autotherapy as I probably wouldn't have lost my ignition key helping you
