Progress.....
Got to work with an open garage door and enjoy the weather. Perfect day for painting.
Here is what I did today. Removed sound mat, clean and painted engine compartment. Before: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod.../Naked_Bay.jpg After: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ew_paint_2.jpg http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ew_paint_1.jpg I bought a generic 3.2 megapix. digital camera. At $150, thought I'd give it a try, but I think its going back to the store. You get what you pay for. |
Looks nice Charlie!

You're on your way now. It looks great, Charlie. How's the engine coming?

You guys and your painted engine compartments . . . .
The only things that needs to be clean on my car are the inside of the engine and transmission and that's about it. Keep up the good work . . . somebody's 911 other than Tony's & Lu's needs to be that clean. |

Started here, engine fresh out the car.
http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...prit.sized.jpg After removing the CIS, fan, fan housing/alt and engine shroud, flipped her over and started removing the exhaust. Check out the rusty exhaust hardware. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...nges.sized.jpg Used the Oxy/MAPP gas setup from the Home Depot and got those suckers red hot: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...2/Oxy_MAPP.jpg http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...t_Nut_Heat.jpg Used a 3/8in 13mm swivel socket for removal. The Barrell nuts needed a 10mm hex T-wrench. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...oval.sized.jpg Done, with only one stud snapping from not enough heat applied prior to removal. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ts_removed.jpg Exhaust and Intake ports were covered, oil cooler in/outs were plugged and distrib. wrapped up ready for power washing. Engine Top Before: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod..._Top_Dirty.jpg Engine Bottom Before: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ttom_Dirty.jpg Engine Top After: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod..._Top_Clean.jpg Transmission too Tranny Before: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...anny_Dirty.jpg Tranny After: http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...anny_Clean.jpg Time to start tearing down the engine to replace head studs and top end R&R. Cam Housings and Covers removed. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...gs_removed.jpg Cam Guts http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...2/Cam_Guts.jpg Heads Coming off http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...Coming_off.jpg Heads off http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ds_Removed.jpg Trademark of a Nikasil cylinder. Dull grey finish. This piston actualy has a little nick in the Nickasil coating. Will be assessed at Competition Engineering. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod..._Cylinders.jpg Carbon, yuck http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ons_Carbon.jpg Heads too http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ved_carbon.jpg Found a broken valve spring on the #2 intake. Sorry for the bad picture. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/mod...ing_Broken.jpg Where am I at now? The top end was sent to Competition Enginnering in CA two weeks ago for cleaning, inspection and head rebuild. The heads will be ported with manifolds to match. P/C's are Nikasil which Porsche states cannot be honed or reringed and Competition Engineering will not rering them even if they are still within spec. I talked to Steve Weiner of Rennsport Systems and he has had success breaking in with new rings with Nickasil cylinders following a strict and long break in period of about 2k miles. Better than $2500 for new Mahle P/C's. Hoping to have the topend back from CE within a few weeks. Stock cams will be sent to Webcam this week for their 20/21 regrind. Should have those back within 3 weeks. While the engine is out, the suspension and breaks are getting attention. 28mm T-bars, Bilstein Sports and Neatrix bushings. OEM trailing arm bushing will get replaced as well. Break calipers will either be rebuilt or replaced with Carrera calipers and rotors with SS lines. Still lots of work to do, but things are moving along. |
Charlie,
Looks good, so when is the engine re-install party?? :D What did you use on that trans to make it look so good? I've been trying just about everything on mine to restore it to the factory shine like that with no luck. ~Eric |

Eric,
Castrol Super Clean and a home power washer. Bring yours on over and we can clean it up in an hour. The Castrol just turns the grime into a watery goo. The tough spots needed a little brushing. Engine reinstall party will not heppen for a little while yet. I'll post when she's all ready. Its been taking a little longer than inticipated, but still hopeful for the end of srping. |
My Nikasil Cs and Mahle Ps had almost unmeasurable wear at 155k miles, so with any luck your should be fine! Re-ringing works fine.
Looks like you will have a winner there when this is done. Nice work. BTW, good to see another Castrol Super Clean & power wash rat in the pack. It really works. Did mine [installed] on Sunday. Great for wheel wells too. |
