Lug studs vs lug bolts
With my SC I've gotten quite used to the convenience of having wheel lug studs vs the lug bolts I had on my Boxster. For my new Cayman R (built but not delivered) I'm looking at the stud conversion kit sold by Pelican. Has anybody done this, and can anybody think of any downside? Porsche must have gone to lug bolts for some reason, by it's not apparent to me.

Porsche changed it for cost, would be my guess.. I've known several 986 boxster folks who a/x (and therefore change wheels frequently) who have converted over without issue.
I imagine the same is true of some 996 guys. iirc, the grand-am spec 996's have to run 5-bolt studs (makes any pit changes under green quicker too). I say go for it! That said, if you aren't frequently changing wheels/tires, you might not really notice any benefit to the swap. |
Agree on savings for changing. I've switched wheels on the 996 at the track several times w/o issues. Hub has nice lip to support wheel/tyre on while lining up that first bolt. That said I would switch to studs if the car ever became a regular at the track.

Thanks for your responses. This will be my track car for the foreseeable future, so I'll be pulling wheels on a regular basis.

www.Race-Studs.com much better quality then the Pelican ones (believe they are Rennline) plus you can get bullet nose if you want. Put them on my Boxster for AX and would never go back

They look very easy to install. Are there any issues or special tools involved? Any DIY sources on this?

Barry,
FWIW, not sure what sort of tool kit will come with the car; I'm presuming it might not have a spare tire. On the earlier 986/996's with the spare tire, the tool kit included an aluminum post the screwed into one of the bolt holes, and helped align the wheel to get the bolts started. We've used it for years on our Boxster. I prefer lug nuts to bolts, but for occasional wheel changes, the alignment post worked quite well. |
If you go to the planet 9 website, you will find discussions on sources, prices, dimensions, etc., for wheels studs and lug nuts.
