Never trust a cold Ho
 

Here's what I found on the inside of the driver's rear tire at VIR last weekend. Luckily I flipped tires Sunday morning and discovered it.

The tire had about 16 HCs and was holding air pressure. Ambient temps Thur/Fri night were very cold; in the mid 20's. Saturday night temps were above 30. Tires had about 33-35lbs of pressure Thursday night but were about 23-24lbs Friday and Saturday night.

All tires had even wear and no signs of cording.

I am assuming the low tire pressure and cold nighttime temps, combined the cycled tire, caused this separation......any opinions? Soft side wall + hard tread + below freezing temps + weight of the car = Failure

Is the solution to increase overnight pressure when temps are below freezing?

holy crap! do you know if you ran on it like this on saturday? maybe you could make sure to do more GENTLE warm-up laps (i know, these arent in your vocab!) to bring them up to temp during cold weather events?

I can't imagine I ran it like this during the day because the pace Saturday afternoon was ummmmm QUICK!

I always warm up and frankly we weren't given a choice in the morning. Red group ran "mandatory" side by side for two laps Fri/Sat morning. :roll:

Both times this happened at VIR right? No issue at SP...just don't drive it anymore! You need to sell it in one piece so Mrs. B-Man can get her kitchen!

Sad to see a Ho retired because of a huge gash. Too bad your not man enough for that to not be a problem. :twisted:


But really, I have heard before that some track tires simply cannot handle temps approaching freezing. Maybe you should consider running high performance street tires on the really cold days. Lower grip is fun!

Freeze Crack Advisory: This advisory addresses proper storage and use of Hoosier tires in cold conditions. Hoosier Tires, especially asphalt and hard compound tires, may experience Rubber Cracking if the tires are transported, crushed, flexed or stressed when frozen. The following guidelines are provided to avoid this problem.
1. Always store Hoosier Racing Tires indoors at temperatures above 32° F.
2. If tires have been subject to 32° F or less, allow them to warm to room temperature (about 70° F)
for a minimum of 24 hrs before tire is mounted, transported or flexed.
3. Always use spare tires not intended for future competition to store vehicles for prolonged periods
of time or winter transport.
4. If below freezing temperatures are expected, please consider shipping tires once more favorable conditions exist.

I thought you had this same issue with slicks you tried. That was in Sept at VIR right?

BMAN, here is your solution. Just give Ms. BMAN the new kitchen.......but put it in Florida or Arizona where you don't have to worry about those chilly morning runs!

Brian, I also had some problems with my R 888's on very cold mornings. The answer may be as simple as these tires really cannot heat up properly in a short time and really do need a gentle warming up process, like keeping them wrapped so they never experience sub freezing temps.

Might not necessarily be a cold weather thing (although 16HC's and freezing temps may have been too much). Others have had this problem (me included) with some Hoosiers.
