944 Turbo Clutch Replacement Cost

The clutch on my 87 951 is beginning to slip, so what should my expected costs be to fix? Also, does anyone know of a reputable shop in the Baltimore area who can do this? I've heard this is a big job.

Also, once it starts to slip, how long until it completely goes? Right now it starts to overrev at full throttle in 3rd of 4th once it gets warm.

Thanks!
Jay

Clutch replacement on your car requires removal of the entire exhaust system, Tranny, and moving the torque tube to the rear of the car enough to facilitate removal of the bell housing. It is a big job timewise because there are very few shortcuts.

I will assume that this is the original clutch so there will be many parts that should be replaced. Other than the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate, you should consider replacing the pilot bearing, slave cylinder (because it will be out anyway), tranny mount (again, you have easy access to it now), nylon cup that the shifter ball sits in (easy access now), and any rear suspension bushings that need to be replaced.

Do not replace the clutch with a rubber centered unit. Go with a clutch that has a spring loaded center.

I'm sure that there are some other things, but those are the items that come to mind.

How long . . . . depends on how gently you drive the car from this point forward, but depending on what is causing the slippage, it could go with very little warning.

Not sure what the local shops are charging, but I'll bet it goes from 1500 to 2500 just for the labor.

Shahverdi's in Pasadena did all my work. The clutch is about 600 and labor abot 1000. Great and honest guy/shop.

From myown wxperience $1600 would be a smoke'n deal (I wouldn't do one for $1K)!!! IMO ~$2500 would be the norm given all the other things that should be replaced while in there.

Well, He charges ~$80 per hour and its an 8-10 hr job. And, he lets me bring in parts so I get the 'net discount.

I agree that other issues should be looked at that could add $500 but he asked about the clutch only.

I've never done an 951 clutch, but I've heard that the labor involved is a least a few hours more than a normally aspirated 944.

Wouldn't that only be on an engine pull?

I've heard 22 hours in labor is what Porsche states fornthe 951, as you need to remove the tranny, torque tube, and exhaust all the way up to the turbo. So at $80/hr, that's $1600+ in labor alone!

The original estimate I got as a SWAG was around $3K, so I was hoping it might be less.

Marc A - Any idea how much for all the parts you recommended replacing? Also, I just replaced the tranny with an AOR model, the car is chipped, and will probably see a fair amount of track time in the future, so any suggestions for upgrades while I'm doing it?

Thanks,
Jay

I once used a shop called Ralph's that I think was in Reisterstown. He seemed to play fair. It's gonna run you $1,500 to $2,000 depending on how many GT3s are in the vicinity of the shop.
