I'm thinking of renting a bay for a few hours at http://www.ditymechanics.com/ during the Christmas break. My intent is to swap out my torque tube but I have never done a job of this magnitude on my own. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in going there with me and lending an experienced eye (I will turn all the wrenches, but this job has a high pucker factor).

Not sure of the date, but I was shooting for the week between Christmas and NewYears.

Anyone interested? Maybe we could do a group event if several people were interested in performing maintenance.

I would probably be interested although I have not done this before.

Interested but haven't done the work. I was going to use them to do my motor mounts when I get around to them. I'm not sure what their policy is on having people stand around, hopefully just sign a waiver.

I've done it on '44s and trust me you are greatly underestimating the time and potential problems of this job. Do you have a new one to go right back in? Why are you removing the old one? Is it to replace the bearings? How about the WYIT tasks. Is yours an auto? Linkage maybe simpler but that lump will likely have to come out to do this. Look at Clark's Garage to see what's needed for '44 as a start point. Call a dealer and ask them for an estimate in hours and $$$ for this too.

Do you have access to a trailer, otherwise your rental fee will likely be measured in days not hours. Wait for Tony K or some others that have done this to chime in...

It's probably a 8+ hour job because I believe you have to drop the rear suspension along with the trans, exhaust ect...

If you're going to do this, consider putting the "improved" version in (available from Mark A - that's his Dorki name but he's not often on the board - perhaps someone here could help you contact him if you're interested). He might also give advice in doing the work.

FWIW, they do allow folks to stand around and/or help. You just have to sign the waiver.

The work will take at least a day because nothing will come apart right or go back together right since it hasn't come apart before. You don't need to have the car on a lift, just a good jacking because the rear suspension can be lowered enough to get the TT to clear the spare tire well without removing it (rear suspension) all together. You will have to remove the rear brake lines which means brake bleeding after everything is buttoned up.

Whether you jack up the car or put it on a lift make sure you can get to the bolt that is directly behind the rear jack point under the running board.

If you don't have impact tools it's 3 days ;)
