any advice on 996 on jack stands?

Gonna take off the two rear tires and replace them. (ran over something and got a flat, figured i'd replace both rear tires at the same time) Saw the thing on pelican http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...ox_jacking.htm

hints? advice? warnings?

thanks in advance

I've never used jack stands for changing tires - don't need to get under the car.

For the jack, I just use a hockey puck.

I put our Boxster on jack stands for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I looked at a bunch of the attachments to the top of the jack stands, and ended up just using my regular unmolested Craftsman stands. Worked fine and didn't leave any noticable scars.

Took a several tries to figure out a way to get the thing up in the air though, because I couldn't put a jack stand in the front spot if I used the jacking spot recommended in the pelican article here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/boxst...fting-car.html because the jack was in the way of the jack stand. I also couldn't reach the rear center jacking point with my jack either because the car was too low.

I think I ended up doing it in this pattern:

Jacked left side rear until the front left lifted and put a jack stand under the front left.

Jacked the right side rear up until the front right lifted and put a jack stand under the front right.

Jacked the right and left rear a little at a time with two different jacks until I could reach the center rear jacking point with my third jack (I have two HF aluminum jacks, and one craftsman steel jack).

Jacked from the rear center and then put jack stands on both sides of the rears.

Works as long as you have 3 jacks...

I have been trying a different solution.

Owners or shop manual should show you where to place jack stands. Don't get the cheep jackstands, but then you need to spend hundreds either. I got a set of the aluminum stands from HF for my bithday last year and have been very happy with them. Decent price IF on sale.

You can easily jack the entire rear of the car up by the engine then place jack stands under the rear jack points. Search Rennlist's 996 section for good pics.

When I had my car up in the air, I put the stands under the rear subframe rather than the jack points. Seemed to work fine.

There's a boss cast into the engine case just behind the sump cover. Use a buffer (hockey puck or wooden block) between the jack and engine case.

I did this once with no seeming ill effects. Others seem to indicate it's a no-no. I'll let you decide.
